Torpedoed!

Listen to the item

In 1941, right bang in the middle of World War II, Violent Tunstall decided to travel from her home in Assam to visit her two sons at school in England. All went well on the voyage over, but it was a different story on the return journey. As Violet's ship passed through the Irish Sea, it was hit by a torpedo and sank.

20 years ago, Violet recorded her experience. Her son, Michael, sent us the tape and we invited him along to the studio to talk about why his mother's recording means so much to him.
