Simon's well intended neighbourhood watch diligence ruined a potential romance for his mother...
"I never normally write down car number plates. Once, in my early teens, I noticed a car parked outside our house. Inside the car, there was a man, staring in my direction. He must have been there for around 10 minutes, enough time for me to become a little suspicious and to note is license plate.
The day after, the police came around, asking if we had heard anything two nights ago, as the adjacent property was burgled. "There was a man in a car outside the house yesterday, staring in our direction".
I gave the number plate details to the policeman. I heard nothing more of the matter.
15 years later, I was visiting my mother. She mentioned the incident and revealed what really happened.
My parents are divorced and my mother was bringing us up alone at the time.
My boss at the time had been persuading this businessman client that he should ask my mother out as she was a good catch. After much persuading, he decided to pluck up the courage to go round to our house to introduce himself.
He parked opposite our house and after 10 minutes of sitting in the car, he just couldn't pluck up enough courage to do it.
Two days later, the police visited him. He managed to persuade them that he had nothing to do with the break-in next door and that he was merely attempting, and failing, to express his romantic intentions to the inhabitant of the adjacent property.
