Christmas tree
Chris and Sharelle Henderson with their son Mark, Christmas Day 2003

Home this Christmas

Listen to the item

This Christmas will be very different from last year's for Chris and Sharelle Henderson.

In September 2003, their son Mark was one of two Britons kidnapped by a guerrilla group, the ELN, while travelling in Columbia.

The story hit the headlines in a big way when his fellow Brit, Matthew Scott, managed to escape. Mark was eventually released and arrived home on Crhistmas eve. But not before the family had endured a terrifying period of wondering whether they would see Mark again.

Chris and Sharelle talked about how they coped, and their plans for this year's Christmas celebrations.
