Prostitute walking the streets

Claire's story

Listen to the item

Claire is 30 and has 2 sons, aged 12 and 7. She's looking forward to spending Christmas with her family but a few years ago such a cosy domestic scene would have been impossible to imagine as her life has twisted and turned in some harrowing directions.

Claire was brought up by her mother as her father left home not long after she was born. When she was a child she was sexually abused by someone within the family.

At 15 her mother's partner, who she regarded as her real dad, left and his departure triggered not only her mother's alcoholism but Claire's own descent into drugs and alcohol.

Claire was 17 when she became pregnant but the relationship didn't last and by this time she was using hard drugs regularly and needed money to fund her habit. For Claire, prostitution was the only solution and she ended up on the streets.
