| | Father's footsteps

 Listen to the item
This summer Yuli Somme and her sister Ellie retraced their father's footsteps in the journey he took to freedom across Norway in 1944 escaping from German soldiers.
Yuli describes her trek across hazardous terrain and her emotions at recognising places her father had described and what it was like to meet people along the way who remembered him.
Yuli's father Sven was Norwegian and was arrested for working for the Resistance. Under sentence of death, he managed to escape and walk the 200 miles across central Norway to Sweden and freedom. Along the way, Yuli's father was helped by the locals who clothed and fed him and offered him places to hide thereby risking their own lives - particularly as 900 German soldiers were sent to track him down.
