Letters from Zanzibar

In 1863, Elizabeth Smith left Thirsk in North Yorkshire and travelled to India to marry her fiancé Henry Jacob.

Henry had left England four years before to work as a book-keeper for a steam navigation company and the couple hadn't seen each other since.

It was a happy reunion and their life overseas was vividly captured in dozens of letters that Elizabeth wrote home to her family, and it is these letters that her great, great neice, Yvonne has recently unearthed.

Bearing bundles of papers, Yvonne joined us from our Norwich studio and she kicked off by reading the very letter that Henry penned to Elizabeth's father, asking for her hand...
