 Ken Cooke lived in the mining district of Doncaster, and attended the Percy Jackson Grammar School. Heinz Wartenberg, a young German boy lived in Lunen near Dortmund and attended the Freiherr vom Stein Gymnasium.
Despite the fact that the World War II had ended a mere 8 years earlier, and Anglo-German relations were perhaps not bursting with entente cordialle, it was nevertheless decided that these two schools would participate in an exchange trip, and Heinz and Ken were two of the youngest to take part - and have remained firm friends ever since.
Ken came into our Leeds studio, and Heinz to our Dortmund premises to talk about their first experiences of each other's countries, and each other....
