Steve and Patsy

Coastwatchers

Listen to the item

St Alban's head in Dorset, once the home of a small coast guard station, and one of the many that were shut down by the government.

But, not to be defeated, in 1994 many local people decided to take up watch themselves, and formed the National Coastwatch Institution.

Steve Latham is a Coastwatch volunteer, his manor is St Albans Head and together with his wife Patsy they spend most weekends keeping watch.

Surrounded by glorious scenery, but sometimes foul weather, they have to walk the long stony track to the tiny look out station where armed with a watchful pair of eyes, monitoring equipment, tea and sandwiches they spend hours gazing out to sea.

But it's also time together, to catch up and chat, which is important as Steve works in London and only returns for the weekends.
