Andrew and his mum, Brenda | |
| | Living with Pancreatitis

 Listen to the item
Since he was 15, Andrew has suffered from pancreatitis, which in its simplest form, is inflammation of the pancreas. However, if the condition is acute, as it certainly is in Andrew's case, it results in the gradual and excruciatingly painful destruction of the pancreas. The most common cause is heavy drinking, but because Andrew was only 15 when he contracted the illness, this didn't apply to him and it took some time for doctors to diagnose this very rare condition.
Andrew's illness has contributed to the break up of his marriage, the loss of his job and means that he now has to live with his parents again.
The pancreatitis has had, therefore, a devastating effect not only on him, but on the rest of his family.
