Almost 70 years ago, Charles Bird Plimpton invented a new construction toy for children. It basically consisted of a plastic base plate with holes drilled in it, into which you pushed thin steel rods.
Bayko bricks were then slotted between these rods enabling the child to construct wonderful semi-detached houses and bungalows amongst other things. And the reason it was called Bayko was because the original bricks were all made from Bakelite.
Tony Russell used to have Bayko when he was a lad. When he learned that there was a Bayko Collectors Club - and that the Club would be the guests of the Train Collectors Society at the 6th Annual National Toy Train and Model Railway Exhibition held in Bedfordshire - he couldn’t resist finding out more. And he wasn’t disappointed.
