In 1971, when Alan was 24 and working for VSO he was sent to what were then the New Hebrides (Vanuatu) to teach horticulture.

He formed a relationship with a local girl Helen who became pregnant but a month before their son David was born, Alan left the islands.

Three years ago, Alan and David – now 31 year-old were re-united, we asked Alan what prompted him to leave Vanuatu.
