When Robert's mother died two years ago her she left a couple of surprises in her will. Not only did she leave rather more money than anyone expected, she had bequeathed the bulk of it to charity.

Robert's grandparents had bought property during the Second World War, and then rented it out to members of the family. Robert's mother had inherited these five houses in the 1970s - and then sold them.

The family had no idea that this money had then been simply left in the bank - Robert's mother always pleaded that she had nothing to her name, even leaving relatives to pay for bills and running repairs.

But despite his father now "a sitting tenant in his own house", Robert refuses to believe that his mother's actions were motivated by malice. He remembers his mother as a popular and good humoured lady, but someone who simply "wasn't fully aware of what you could actually do with that huge sum of money".
