For 25 years Roger Chubb dreamt of swimming the English Channel..

Swimming the English Channel was not an idea that leapt fully formed from Roger's brain. It was his Aunt Hilda who inspired this particular venture.

In 1916, Roger's Aunt Hilda's husband was killed in the First World War. In 1920, to pay for a headstone for her husband's grave, Aunt Hilda answered an advertisement which offered money to anyone who tried to swim the Channel. Within 6 miles of the French Coast, Aunt Hilda had to give up her attempt.

81 years later, her nephew had a go himself.
