Young Carer

Listen again in full

9 year old Zack cares for his epileptic mother...

Zack Steels is nine years old. His parents divorced when he was four and he now lives with his mum Gina and his younger brother Luke.

Zack and Luke enjoy all the normal stuff that kids get up to (like dressing up). But Zack's life isn't quite like that of other children of his age.

For the last thirteen years, his mother Gina has suffered from almost daily fits of epilepsy and Zack is her primary carer. Just to complicate matters further, Luke has Asperger's Syndrome.

Listen to the interview to find out how Zack deals with this challenge.
