A Better World

John Constable has a landscaped miniature countryside scene in his garden. It's taken him 7 years to construct, and its been a way for him to connect with a lost rural past. Max Cotton went to meet him....

Hardy's Cottage Sylvia rang to tell us that she's had several names. All her life, people have given her names that they wanted to give her and felt that with every name she played a role: she was more boisterous as Frances, more ladylike as Vanessa. Her father was married seven times, and her mother was married six times. Brought up by nuns and with a complicated family structure the first time i went to a party and the room was full of black people - she was petrified. Having to realise that she was amongst people she should know more about. Got to learn about yourself and your accent. Sylvia worked in a youth club in Brixton. One job took her to Holland, where she met and married. The marriage only lasted a couple of years. Sylvia was told that she had two sisters and a brother in Manchester. She made arangements to meet them. She found that although they had the same parents - they had no connection. As a child she'd dream of having brothers and sisters. She would pray for a twin sister. To discover in later years that she had them - Sylvia has had the strantge experience of having a call from someone claiming to Then another sister discovered that actually she was a sibling.
