The bestselling crime writer Val McDermid is well known for a series of books which began in 1987 with Report For Murder - and continues with her most recent, Fever of the Bone. Her novel The Wire in the Blood was turned into a celebrated TV series.

Originally published in 1951 (under the pseudonym Claire Morgan) as The Price of Salt, this book is actually the work of Patricia Highsmith (1921-1995), best known for the Ripley novels. It's the story of a romance between two women who meet in a department store. In this excerpt they meet for the first time. Reader: Kate Layden.
