One of Granta's 2003 selection of young British novelists, Hari Kunzru won several prizes for his debut The Impressionist. He now lives in New York and his most recent novel, My Revolutions, was published in 2007.

Mikhail Lermontov (1814-1841) was one of 19th-century Russia's most important writers. His novel A Hero of Our Time, published in 1840, narrates the exploits of a soldier, the amoral antihero Pechorin. Here, Pechorin arrives at Taman, a town in the Caucasus. Reader: Bruce Alexander.
