Twice nominated for the Man Booker prize, Colm Toibin won the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award for his novel The Master. His most recent book, published earlier this year, was Brooklyn.

Esther Waters, first published in 1894, is a controversial novel by a writer who seemed to specialise in scandal, the Irish author George Moore (1852-1933). Its story about a young woman who raises a child out of wedlock shocked many readers of the time. Reader: Kate Layden.
