HISTORICAL WALKS IN GREAT BRITAIN
John McCarthy is joined by writer and broadcaster Charlie Connelly who’s been following in the footsteps of significant historical figures in a series of major walks around Britain and Ireland.
The first British mosque was established in Woking in 1889 and now it’s estimated that there are over 1,600 Mosques in Britain, from the grand Regents Park Mosque in London to small community Mosques in many of Britain’s city and town centres. Asian Network presenter Adil Ray shares his knowledge and discusses the travelling pleasures of visiting mosques in Britain and further afield.

Charlie Connellyis a writer and broadcaster. He’s also been a rock and roll tour manager, a mortuary assistant and the marketing manager for the Complete Works of Lenin. Charlie has been walking in England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland in the footsteps of some pivotal historical figures and retracing some historical routes of great significance. His book ‘And Did Those Feet’ was a Radio 4 ‘Book of the Week’ recently.

Adil Ray was born in Birmingham and is of Pakistani and Kenyan origin. He joined the BBC Asian Network in 2002 and presents his own daily popular music with comedy “Adil Ray” Show. Adil goes regularly to the Central Mosque in Birmingham and considers it both a religious building and a community centre, a link with cultural past and present and with his parents and family. He is interested in the small houses that have been converted into mosques in city centres around the country - simple and right in the middle of the community but he has also visited Turkey and Pakistan where he’s been to some really spectacular mosques. Although British Mosques aren’t architectural jewels some, like Regents Park, are quite beautiful. Adil is keen to persuade people to visit a mosque, whatever their background or beliefs.
