Dan Cruickshank is an architectural historian. His latest television series Dan Cruickshank’s Adventures in Architecture started on BBC Two at the beginning of April. Andy Merrifield is a former geography teacher from Liverpool who also writes books about philosophy and philosophers. Andy went to live in New York to fulfil a boyhood dream but, weary of the pace of life there, moved to the Auvergne in France. To combat the debilitating speed of everything Andy decided to take a tour following in the footsteps of Robert Louis Stevenson, who in 1878 made a journey around the Auvergne region of France with a donkey called Modestine.
With his own donkey called Gribouille (Scribble) Andy travelled very slowly around Southern France; he has recounted his tranquil trip in a book entitled The Wisdom of Donkeys.
