TRAVEL AS THERAPY Travel is often considered a time to escape from the stresses and strains of daily life. But can it do more than just recharge our batteries? For some it provides a positive psychological or emotional healing and this healing has traditionally been associated with sea air, a spa or a sanatorium. Sandi Toksvig examines the notion of travel as therapy.
Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love explains how her travels helped her deal with the heartache and depression she experienced after a bitter divorce.
William Fiennes after a spell in hospital and a long period of convalescence was inspired to follow in the path of snow geese on their 3,000 mile spring migration across America and Canada. The Snow Geese chronicles his journey.
Rosanna de Lisle, journalist and contributor to the Daily Telegraph, lost her father unexpectedly nearly three years ago. Since then she has taken three trips abroad with her mother and weighs the balance of their therapeutic value following bereavement.
Dr Jonathan Andrews, Lecturer in the history of Medicine at the University of Newcastle has studied the historical relationship between travel and therapy. Dr Andrews discusses doctors' travel advice in the 18 th and 19 th centuries and what aspects of travel were thought to be therapeutic.
