Nanda Devi is a mountain in India on the border with Tibet. It is the highest mountain in India and historically therefore once held the title of being the highest point in the British empire. For Indians Nanda Devi is a very sacred place. Nanda Devi is the wife of Shiva, and Hugh says he was very conscious that this is the heartland of the hindu gods.
