Stef Penney and Georgina Harding Stef Penney was chosen this year as the winner of the Costa First Novel award and was praised by the judges for the brilliant evocation of nineteenth century Canada in her murder mystery The Tenderness of Wolves.
In fact, Stef has never travelled to Canada and the snowy landscapes and harsh conditions her characters face were all the result of research and imagination.
