Novelist Bali Rai has written six books for teenagers, including Rani and Sukh and (Un)arranged Marriage, which all depict the lives of young people growing up in multi cultural Leicester and the pressures they face. His latest, The Last Taboo, is about a relationship between a young Asian girl and her black boyfriend. He talks to Kathryn Hughes about writing for teenagers, and why he thinks schools could do more to promote reading.

The National Academy of Writing
The National Academy of Writing was originally opened in 2002, and organisers hoped it would be 'RADA of literature'. Now, after a troubled period of financial difficulties, it's being relaunched with a permanent home at the University of Central England in Birmingham. Chairman Barry Turner and novelist Nicola Monaghan, who'll be teaching at the academy, join Kathryn Hughes.

British Science Fiction
As a new series on Radio 4 - Imagining Albion - explores the history of British science fiction writing and for the first time in its history, the Arthur C Clarke Award had an all British shortlist, Kathryn Hughes talks to writer Justina Robson and publisher Jo Fletcher about the current state of sci-fi in this country, and whether it still faces an image problem.
