NATIONAL POETRY DAY
To celebrate National Poetry Day, Front Row has commissioned a poem - on the theme of Food. Eight poets have created a chain-letter style poem, each providing two lines, which were then handed to the next poet...
I do not like poems about food
Just read me one more and I'll scream (Wendy Cope)
Cindery toast, milk’s skin, crust of cream -
By the gristle in a sausage and mature cheddar’s dreams (Jacob Polley)
To partake of such grub would be insane
Especially if, like me, you're prone to migraine (Grace Nichols)
Fast verse like fast food just can't satisfy,
A poem's a slowly cooked lamb shank - or a three foot thick pie (Ian Mcmillan)
Scribbling his transient verse on rice paper
The poet feels a sudden pang of hunger (Brian Patten)
A fresh image tickles the tip of my tongue;
I taste its salt - then find it's gone (Catherine Smith)
I’ll taste it again in the seafood chowder
Which needs the lift of chilli and curry powder (Paulin)
Now do you see what I mean
about food poems, and the bit about the scream? (Collins)
