SUTHERLAND'S PORTRAIT OF WINSTON CHURCHILL
In 1954 a portrait of the then Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, was unveiled in Westminster Hall. It was painted by Graham Sutherland on the occasion of Churchill's 80th birthday. Churchill took an extreme dislike to it from the start and the following year Churchill's wife demanded it be destroyed. But art historian Angus Stewart discovered that another painting of Churchill by Sutherland survives. It will be displayed for the first time in 20 years at an exhibition to mark the centennary of Sutherland's birth. Mark Lawson talks to writer Piers Brendon, keeper of the Churchill Archives, and Angus Stewart, curator of the forthcoming exhibition.

Graham Sutherland, National Hall, London Olympia, 25 February - 2 March 2003
