WAITING FOR GODOT
50 years ago, a new play opened in Paris, Waiting for Godot. As a new production of the play opens at Dublin's Gate Theatre, Front Row looks back at the play and learns what connects its writer, Samuel Beckett with Dame Edna Everage. With Sir Peter Hall, Barry Humphries, writer David Bradbury and Barry McGovern, who is currently appearing as Vladimir at the Gate Theatre.

PHILIP PULLMAN
Novelist and critic Kate Saunders joins Mark Lawson to discuss the BBC Radio 4 adaptation of children's writer Philip Pullman's trilogy, His Dark Materials. Each of the books, Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass has been adapted as a two-and-a-half hour Saturday afternoon drama with a cast including Terence Stamp.

CITY OF GOD
Jose Arroyo, lecturer on film at the University of Warwick talks to Mark Lawson about a new Brazilian film, City of God, directed by Fernando Meirelles. The title City of God refers to the increasingly ironic names of a housing project in Rio de Janeiro which, after being taken over by drugs barons, became notorious for its violence. The film centres on the life of two slum children who choose very different paths for themselves - one becomes a ganster and one a photographer. City of God opens at selected cinemas round the country from 3 January. Certificate 18

TRIBUTE TO MARY WESLEY
Mary Wesley's recent death at the age of 90 ended a novel writing career which famously hadn't begun until the age of 70 with the publication of her book Jumping the Queue followed by The Camomile Lawn. Mark Lawson looks back at her life. Mary Welsey's books are published by Black Swan
