MONDAY 14 OCTOBER
FRONT ROW SPECIAL: ALFRED BRENDEL
Presented by Mark Lawson
Despite having few conventional piano lessons, Alfred Brendel became one of the world's greatest keyboard players: his recordings of Mozart and Beethoven setting the standards by which others are judged.
But his life has not been confined to music: one of the last examples of a certain kind of Central European intellectual - born in 1931 in what is now the Czech Republic - he is passionately interested in art, politics and poetry and has published a book of his own verse.
In a Front Row special - Alfred Brendel talks about the history, technique, emotions and interests which make his fingers move as they do. Plus why he stays out of the kitchen.
MUSIC:
The music used during this interview was (in order):
Mozart: Piano Concerto K.466 (cadenza)
Schumann: Fantasiestücke Op.12 (Des Abends)
Beethoven: Piano Sonata Op.53 'Waldstein' (last movement)
Mozart: Piano Sonata K.331 (first movement)
The Veil of Order by Alfred Brendel is published by Faber and Faber (ISBN: 0571210619)
