SALMA HAYEK
Frida is based on the life of Mexico's most famous female artist Frida Kahlo, who suffered from polio, endured a hideous trolley-car accident, married Diego Rivera and had an affair with Trotsky. It's a life story that sounds like the plot of one of the Mexican soap operas in which Salma Hayek started her career. She talks to Joe Cornish about fighting long and hard to get 'Frida' off the ground, becoming one of its producers and seeing off rival projects from Jennifer Lopez and Madonna.
Robert McKee
Mckee is one of the most famous and popular screenwriting gurus in the world. Many studios regard his course as compulsory. So great is his fame that he's been immortalised as a character in the new Nic Cage film, Adaptation. He talks to Joe Cornish about what the 10 scriptwriting commandments are and Graham Linehan, creator of Father Ted, and writer and ex-presenter of Back Row, Andrew Collins, reveal what they thought when they attended one of Mckee's seminars.
Solaris
Tarkovsky's existential sci-fi drama Solaris is the thinking man's 2001, a three hour meditation about life on earth set in space. If you sit through it, enjoy it and understand it, you are officially clever. Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney have attempted to remake it in a slicker, sexier way. Antonia Quirke tells Back Row how the new Solaris compares to the old.
