Francois Ozon's 8 Women, which premiered at the London Film Festival this week, and Todd Haynes Far From Heaven, (due out next year) are both colourful melodramas with thinly-veiled passion and over-ripe dialogue. Do these films mark a return to 1950s melodrama and what exactly are these 'women's pictures'? Back Row talks to Professor Jeanine Basinger, author of A Woman's View, and critic Nigel Floyd.
