A favourite song:
‘Banoyi’ means ‘aeroplane’ and it’s a song of celebration which I wrote when Nelson Mandela was released from prison. During those hard years of exile, I’d harboured the hope that one day he’d be free and I’d be able to return home to South Africa. In 1993, I had that experience and it was wonderful.
The lyrics say, ‘Now that everything’s fine, now that apartheid is over, I’ll take that plane and climb over those beautiful mountains that surround my country. I’ll get home and meet my people, my friends and family. We’ll get together and have some fun.’
