Frederick Furnivall - eccentric Victorian scholar-gypsy - played a crucial part in launching the Oxford English Dictionary (and nearly sinking the project) and he was immortalised in the pedantic figure of the Water Rat in Wind in the Willows. But the true passions of his life were pretty young women and sculling on the river Thames - pleasures he combined by training teams of waitresses to row.
