Duration:

45 minutes

Programme Details

This week on The Verb, one of Britain 's most inventive writers gives Ian McMillan an exclusive insight into his forthcoming novel, The Book of Dave. It tells the story of how the rantings of a homophobic and paranoid taxi driver become the bible for a religious cult. Will Self reads from the novel, which mixes anglo-saxon with sci-fi and satire, and reveals the secrets of his own writing processes and thoughts.

Ian's also joined by one of the world's most famous screenwriters, who wrote the screenplay of the Luis Bunuel classic, Belle Du Jour, and adapted Tin Drum for the screen. Thrice Oscar nominated screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere tells us why Einstein still delights in the 21st century and how physics is a leap of great imagination.

Peter Belgvad goes undercover to reveal the secret life of books - and discovers what they do when no-one is looking. Will Self and Jean-Claude Carriere have some insights into this too

And the poet of textiles and gothic revenge, Jane Yeh, reads from her critically acclaimed first collection of poetry in which an object like a discarded glove is a key to a whole emotional world.

The Verb, at 21.45 here on BBC Radio 3.
