On The Verb this week Ian McMillan talks to the poet Kei Miller, who has written his first novel. The Same Earth tells the story of the Jamaican village Watersgate and the characters who live there, over a period of fifty years.

Also on the programme, Ian investigates the history and purpose of aphorisms with James Geary and Simon May who are organising a conference on the subject, and there's a brand new story from novelist Will Ashon, about a man who lives in a hole.

And folk singer Julie Fowlis, who sings in Gaelic, performs in the studio.
