6 July 2007

Friday 6 July 2007 21:45-22:30 (Radio 3)

This is the last Verb of the present season but we'll be back in September in all our misty, mellow fruitfulness. You'll be able to join us live in the Theatre here at Broadcasting House and we're cooking up a whole series of other treats. In the meanwhile please feel free to snack on our little sister programme, The Adverb, which is part of the BBC proms lunchtime chamber music concerts. It will be popping up on Thursdays during the evening prom with programmes of new writing and classic texts based on the Shakespearean theme of this year's concerts
food.

Food, glorious food - and lashings of it - that's what you can expect when you tune in to The Verb this week so loosen your belt, shake out your napkin and prepare to feast.

Ian McMillan will be sampling Barbara Kingsolver's new salad of a book, Animal Vegetable, Miracle - an account of her family's attempt to lead the good, green life in the Appalachians; Barbara's best selling peer, Kate Grenville will be reading a specially commissioned story, Humble Pie in which two of the central characters from her acclaimed novel, The Secret River, return to digest a hard lesson about class in Australia.

There's food poetry too from Matthew Sweeney and Jo Shapcott. Matthew will be sharing a few morsels from his new book, Black Moon and Jo will be rustling up a poetic banquet from ingredients found on the shelves of the Poetry Library, which re-opened this week after two years of closure. Then, if you've still got room you can sample some of the transatlantic delights contained in Alimentum, a New York magazine devoted exclusively to literature and food.
