26 November 2005

Saturday 26 November 2005 22:15-22:45 (Radio 3)

This week Paul Farley takes the chair, and is joined by Colin Teevan with his next installment in his footballing epic, The Keaniad - the witty Greek tragedy of player Roy Keane.

Duration:

30 minutes

Programme Details

This week poet Paul Farley takes over the reins in The Verb studio. He's joined by the Irish playwright Colin Teevan , who brings The Verb another wry and witty instalment of his mock-epic The Keaniad. Teevan's Greek version of the Roy Keane story began with the World Cup in 2002, and casts the volatile footballer as the classically flawed Achilles. Following Keane's recent departure from Manchester United, the latest episode sees Achilles incurring the wrath of a vengeful Apollo, or Alex Ferguson as we know him. Colin joins Paul to discuss how he melds Greek tragedy to the world of football and what it tells us about modern masculinity, and there's a chance to hear his Keaniad monologue read by the acclaimed Irish actor Jim Norton .
Also on the programme, The Verb's award-winning eartoonist Peter Blegvad continues his series of aural delights with a piece from the Language Show at Olympia, and there's a chance to hear new work from the poet Tim Turnbull, one of five contenders battling it out for the first major award for performance poetry in the UK. Plus, Paul explores the revelations hidden within the literary manuscript with poet Peter Porter and literary curator, Chris Fletcher .

That's all on The Verb with Paul Farley and his guests at the slightly later time of 22.15, here on BBC Radio 3.
