As New Writing North, Live Theatre and Northern Stage collaborate on a Festival of Stories written in response to fragments of Chekhov and Raymond Carver, playwright Margaret Wilkinson joins Ian McMillan to explain the links between the two, and why Chekhov is often described as the master of the short story and drama. 'Kaput', by Margaret Wilkinson, is on now at the Live Theatre in Newcastle until 30th October.
Ali Smith, author of 'The Whole Story and Other Stories', 'Other Stories and Other Stories' and 'Hotel World' (all published by Penguin) reads from her new and unpublished story 'Trachtenbauer', which stems from a from a fragment of Chekhov's work. Ali Smith will be reading 'Trachtenbauer' on Monday 25th October, also at the Live Theatre in Newcastle.
Nick Cave, the literate rock star: novelist, musician, lyricist and poet talks to Ian about the influence of biblical language on his writing, his relationship with his father, and, after years of writing murder ballads, the challenge to write the spousal fidelity love song. His new double album, 'The Lyre of Orpheus' and 'Abbattoir Blues' are available on Mute record label, and his novel 'And the Ass Saw the Angel' is published by Penguin. Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds begin their UK tour in November with a special warm up show on the 3rd at Hastings Pier. The tour ends with three dates at London's Brixton Academy on 10th, 11th and 12th November.
