The Birth of the Royal Court

Theatre director Dominic Dromgoole explores the beginnings of one of the most influential theatres of the 20th Century, the Royal Court - which opened under legendary director George Devine 50 years ago.

Dominic meets key figures from the theatre's origins such as William Gaskill and George Devine's daughter Harriet. He talks to other directors from the time, like Sir Peter Hall and Frith Banbury, to unpick some of the clichés about British theatre before the Court. And he explores the power and legacy of Look Back in Anger - the play that made the Court's name. Was it really the radical battlecry it seemed at the time?
