This evening on Night Waves, Susan Hitch talks to the novelist and Nobel Laureate V S Naipaul. His new novel, Magic Seeds , has at its centre the character Willie Chandran, a man whose lifelong wanderings have left him a perpetual outsider. In an extended interview, V S Naipaul talks about the similarities - and contrasts - between his own rootlessness and his character's, and explains how surprise is at the bottom of all he does.

Also in the programme, a review of a television drama which imagines the events that might follow the explosion of a terrorist "dirty bomb" in central London.

We've the latest in our series of interviews with young British designers.

And as a New York gallery stages an exhibition of the photographs depicting American abuse of Iraqi prisoners, Night Waves asks whether the images are pornography or valid photojournalism.
