Thirty years ago he was considered America’s most popular unknown novelist, now he is simply one of the best known writers in the world. These days when anyone wants to be a bit more precise they simply say he’s “the crime laureate” or he is “the hottest thriller writer in the US”.
The man in question is of course Elmore Leonard and this evening’s Night Waves is devoted to Philip Dodd’s in depth interview with him. As you might expect they discuss violence, cool and the art of dialogue, but they also talk about jazz, drinking and women.

Join Philip Dodd here on BBC Radio 3 at nine thirty this evening if you want the low down on the crime writers’ crime writer.

Additional information

The Complete Western Stories by Elmore Leonard is published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson this week. His last thriller, The Hot Kid, is also being published in Phoenix paperback.

To celebrate the publication of The Complete Western Stories the National Film Theatre in London will be screening a couple of films based on Leonard’s books – 3:10 to Yuma and The Tall T. Both are part of the NFT’s season devoted to the best Westerns.

Elmore Leonard will receive the Crime Writers’ Association Cartier Diamond Dagger Award on Wednesday.
