Extreme Green

Tuesday 29 May 2007 21:45-22:30 (Radio 3)

Cheek by Jowl's Cymbeline
Kenan Malik talks to the acclaimed theatre director Declan Donnellan about his new production of Shakespeare's Cymbeline.

Donnellan's company, 'Cheek By Jowl', is best known for its radical reworking of stage classics, but Cymbeline has rarely been revived in the last few decades.

Declan Donnellan explains the allure of reworking this most febrile of Shakespeare's late plays.

Cheek by Jowl's 'Cymbeline' is now playing at The Barbican in London.

Jan Svankmajer's latest filmLunacy is on at the National Film Theatre on London's South Bank.

Surrealist cinema
Salvador Dali, the giant of twentieth century Surrealist painting, may not be a name you'd associate with film.

A new exhibition at Tate Modern in London reveals the central role of cinema in his work.

Meanwhile, the latest offering from Czech surrealist film-maker Jan Svankmajer, best known for his nightmarish yet hilarious work, retells some of the short stories of Edgar Allan Poe.

Film historian Ian Christie casts a comparative eye over these two unique Surrealist masters.

Dali and Film is on at the Tate Modern in London from 1 June.

Evolution and Religion
Kenan will also explore how much evolutionary science can tell us about our capacity for religious belief with the help of evolutionary scientist Robin Dunbar and geneticist Steve Jones.

Extreme Green Design
Kenan hears ideas at the far end of the spectrum which push forward radical plans for a greener future. Among them is a demonstration eco house, the Earthship in Fife.

If you're interested in making your own house greener, then you may be interested in Architect in the House, a scheme run by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) on the theme How Green is Your Space .
