60th anniversary of the Blood Transfusion Service

Monday 25 September 2006 21:30-22:15 (Radio 3)

To mark the 60th anniversary of the Blood Transfusion Service in Britain, Philip Dodd explores the macabre history of passing blood from body to body. Issues range from 17th Century anxieties about identity transference when animal blood was given to humans, to more modern concerns about the spread of viruses such as HIV/Aids.

Francis Bacon
Francis Bacon, who died in 1992, created many of his most memorable (and for many most harrowing) images in the 1950's.

A major new exhibition opening at the Sainsbury Centre in Norwich explores the key themes of Bacon's work from that period and includes many paintings, from private collections around the world, which have rarely been seen in public.

This 50 strong collection of paintings - including classic Bacon images of screaming heads and trapped human forms in claustrophobic spaces - offers fresh insights into a painter working through obsessions and taking huge experimental risks.

The artist Maggie Hambling visits the new show and considers Bacon's powers and his legacy with Philip Dodd.

Zinedine Zidane
Zinedine Zidane is one of the most respected footballing stars of the modern age.

Zidane is now the subject of a film that attempts to re-energise the sports documentary.

Zidane: A 21 st Century Portrait is the work of film maker artists Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno.
Using 17 synchronised cameras they filmed Zidane during a Read Madrid match against Villareal, concentrating entirely on Zidane and his movements.

Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno join Philip Dodd.
