Tonight on Night Waves Philip Dodd talks to Patrick McCabe about his new novel Winterwood. Known for single-handedly creating his own genre - affectionately dubbed 'Bog Gothic' - McCabe's latest book follows the life of the troubled Redmond Hatch, who slips through the cracks of the Irish economic miracle and is haunted by sinister visitations from his - and perhaps also his country's - past.

Political journalist John Lloyd talks about BBC ONE's new blockbuster drama The State Within. Set in Washington it explores the diplomatic relationship between Britain and the United States in the light of an imagined terrorist threat.

As we look forward to Radio 3's Free Thinking Festival in Liverpool this weekend we talk to philosopher Jonathan Ree and Literature Professor Jonathan Sawday about the greatest free thinkers of the past, and the possibilities for free thinking today.

And Nigel Floyd reviews the new period thriller The Prestige. Adapted from Christopher Priest's award winning novel of rival magicians in turn of the century London, the movie stars Michael Caine, Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale and David Bowie.
