Youssou N'Dour

Thursday 18 October 2007 21:45-22:30 (Radio 3)

Gabriel Gbadamosi talks to one of Africa's most influential musicians, the Senegalese singer/songwriter Youssou N'Dour. Youssou chats about the inspiration he finds in the northern landscape and traditions of his homeland, and the humanitarian concerns that drive his music.

Duration:

Gabriel Gbadamosi talks to the man who bridges the gap between music in Africa and popular music in the West, Youssou N'Dour. They discuss Youssou's new CD, Give and Take, his ambivalence towards the Live8 project and the social and political impulses that have shaped his work over the years.

Sir Basil Spence is possibly Scotland's most renowned architect and one of only a few in his profession to become a household name in Britain. His work ranges from the campus of the University of Sussex, to a cathedral, an airport and a nuclear power station. The centenary of his birth is celebrated with a major exhibition dedicated to his career and entitled Back to the Future. Gabriel Gbadamosi and guests - the architecture critic Jonathan Glancey and the architect Rab Bennetts - discuss the legacy of Sir Basil Spence on tonight's Night Waves.

Also on the programme, as the Turner Prize for contemporary British art moves to Liverpool, Gabriel Gbadamosi sniffs the air for controversy as he surveys this year's short listed artists. And one of this country's most admired theatre critics, Michael Billington, leads a discussion on the current health of British theatre.
