Film and opera are combined as Oscar-winning Anthony Minghella makes his operatic debut at the English National Opera, directing Puccini's classic love story Madame Butterfly. Is it a successful partnership? Phillip Dodd finds out.

In Night Waves tonight, the filmmaker Anthony Minghella makes his opera debut with his new production of 'Madam Butterfly' at the ENO in London . And one writer on another: Ian Rankin will be reviewing Paul Auster's latest novel 'The Brooklyn Follies'.
A new book by Cynthia Weber, 'Imagining America at War', looks at the films that emerged from Hollywood in the period between 9/11 and the declaration of war on Iraq . Cynthia Weber and the journalist and MP Michael Gove will be discussing the ways in which America reflected itself through film with Philip Dodd.
And the comedian and writer Mat Fraser will be in the studio to talk about his new show 'Thalidomide! a Musical'.
