Night Waves

1 December 2004

Wednesday 1 December 2004 21:30-22:15 (Radio 3)

To mark the centenary of the Entente Cordiale, Philip Dodd and guests consider the history of relations between France and Scotland, starting with the Auld Alliance signed against the English in 1295, and based on the principle that "my enemy's enemy is my friend".

Duration:

45 minutes

Programme Details

Philip Dodd assesses Al Pacino's performance as Shylock in the new film version of Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice

There's also a review of another Hollywood star, Holly Hunter, as she appears on stage in Marina Carr's new play, By the Bog of Cats, as it opens in London

And to mark seven hundred years of the Auld Alliance between Scotland and France, the poets Robert Crawford and Richard Price examine the two countries' literary affinities.
