14 March 2005

Monday 14 March 2005 21:30-22:15 (Radio 3)

Novelist Cynthia Ozick talks to Paul Allen about her novel The Bear Boy - set in Depression era New York - about being a 'Jewish writer,' and about being on the shortlist for the 2005 Man Booker Prize.

Duration:

45 minutes

Programme Details

Cynthia Ozick may not be as well known as Philip Roth or John Updike but many of her fellow writers consider her to be one of their peers - a fact recently recognised by her inclusion on the list of contenders for the first Man Booker International Prize. She has a towering reputation as an essayist, and her novels such as The Puttermesser Papers reveal both her heart and her humour. This month sees the publication of her latest book - The Bear Boy - and in Night Waves Paul Allen talks to her about its genesis, its characters and their struggle to make sense of the world.

There'll also be an assessment of two new books about philosophy - the new edition of Ted Honderich's Oxford Companion and the Concise Encyclopedia of Western Philosophy, edited by Jonathan Ree. Both men have been invited to discuss their inclusions and omissions, and the thinking behind it all.

And if that all sounds a bit solemn there'll be a review of the latest work from America's best loved underground cartoonist, Robert Crumb. And the writer of the first sensual history of English Football, David Winner, will be explaining how mud and cold showers have shaped the modern game.
