1 October 2004

Friday 1 October 2004 21:45-22:15 (Radio 3)

Susan Hitch and guests discuss Anthony Sher's adaptation of Primo Levi's If This Is a Man, which he performs at the National Theatre.

Duration:

30 minutes

Programme Details

Anthony Sher talks to Susan Hitch about playing Primo Levi on the stage at the National Theatre. Levi's powerful memoir documenting his time in Auschwitz, If This is a Man, has become one of the definitive accounts of the Holocaust. Sher talks about the challenge of adapting it for his one man show which opens this week.

Writer Michele Roberts remembers Francoise Sagan - the French novelist who died at the weekend and whose Bonjour Tristesse, written at the age of 18, inspired a generation.

And, as the opening punches are thrown in the first of three Presidential debates, one of America's leading literary theorists, Stanley Fish, delivers his verdict on George W. Bush and John Kerry's respective performances, rhetoric and ability to present ideas.
