Thomas Keneally
Matthew Sweet talks to author Thomas Keneally. Having previously cast a novelist's eye over history in Schindler's Ark, the Australian writer now ventures further back in time to the events of January 1788, when the first convict transports arrived on the south east coast of Australia.

Thomas Keneally's The Commonwealth of Thieves is published by Chatto and Windus. It will be read on BBC Radio 4 at 9.45am, beginning on the 5 June.

Micro Compact Home
Matthew also talks to two men who may be about to revolutionise student and leisure architecture.

Architects Horden Cherry Lee have designed a 2.6 metre cube which houses a shower, toilet, two double beds, and a kitchen, and with television, sound system and internet connection built in.

They explain their aim to move away from houses as structures built around the dimensions of a sofa and towards dwellings more sympathetic to their surroundings, both in the city and the countryside.

The micro-compact home pioneered by Horden Cherry Lee Architects can be seen at this year's Grand Designs Live exhibition at ExCel in London's Docklands from the 2 - 4 June and at Berkley Square in London from 6 - 10 June. www.microcompacthome.com
