Philip Dodd and guests explore the history of the portrayal of the white working class in this country. Variously referred to as "white trash", "chavs", "neds", or "kevs", they get a rough ride in contemporary Britain. But how do today's attitudes and behaviour differ from the white working class of 50 or 100 years ago? Duration: 45 minutes |
Programme Details Why has Britain fallen out of love with its white, working class?
Britain 's white, working class was once portrayed as the salt of the earth, but now its members are often mocked and demonised. The broadsheets cast them as hooligans and xenophobes, whilst new websites such as Chavscum openly show contempt for their tastes and attitudes. What has the white, working class done to deserve this portrayal, and why is this happening now? Tonight on Night Waves Undercurrents, Philip Dodd explores these questions with the novelist Tim Lott, the writer Bea Campbell and with the journalist Michael Collins, whose new book The Likes of Us looks at the changing fortunes of the working class community in Southwark in London.
